Lieut. James Cook was an expert cartographer as well as a skilled navigator and experienced ship’s captain. Aboard his ship, the “Endeavor”, he circumnavigated and charted the three islands. Although he made a few errors, he charted Banks Peninsula as an island and speculated that Stewart Island was a peninsula – the accuracy of this chart is outstanding.
